2nd International Research Symposium on Gender Equity and Equality

The 2nd International Research Symposium on Gender Equity and Equality (IRSGEE 2024), organized by the Centre for Gender Equity and Equality (CGEE) at the University of Jaffna, was a landmark event held on December 11, 2024, at the Kailasapathy Auditorium. The symposium, themed “Intersectional and Integrated Perspectives on Gender Mainstreaming,” also known as “Viomam,” was a significant satellite conference under the Jaffna University International Research Conference (JUICe-2024). Highlighting the theme “Viomam,” a Tamil term meaning “infinite expanse,” the symbolic reflection of breaking barriers and envisioning a world where diversity is celebrated, voices are valued, and collaboration fosters growth. The event also launched three significant publications a symposium magazine detailing CGEE’s journey, comprehensive research proceedings, and a monograph of extended research studies underscoring the symposium’s commitment to advancing knowledge and fostering transformation. IRSGEE 2024 brought together scholars, policymakers, practitioners, and community members to discuss the pressing issues of gender equity and equality from multidisciplinary and integrated perspectives.

The symposium’s opening was marked by an impactful awareness exhibition focusing on child abuse and gender-based violence. This exhibition showcased 56 real-life incidents through visual narratives, including a thought-provoking doll display that illustrated survivors’ stories. By humanizing these experiences, the exhibition sparked meaningful conversations about the importance of prevention, intervention, and support mechanisms.

The conference chair, Prof. Shivany Shanmugathas, served as a guiding force, ensuring the event’s alignment with the overarching theme of integrated and intersectional gender mainstreaming. The symposium was encouraged with a keynote address by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jaffna, Prof. S. Srisatkunarajah, who emphasized the university’s commitment to addressing gender inequality as part of its academic and social mandate. The conference’s convener, Dr. (Mrs.) Dilogini Sangarathas, highlighted the importance of building an inclusive dialogue to advance gender equality.

A dance performance by differently-abled students, who had secured second place at the national level, was a profound highlight. This cultural interlude captivated the audience and reinforced the theme of inclusivity and empowerment. Prominent keynote speakers included; Ms. Azusa Kubota, Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme. Mr. Naguleswaran Tharmalingam, a UK-based legal expert and director of the Tharmam Centre. Dr. Manoj Fernando, Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences at Rajarata University.

A notable feature of IRSGEE 2024 was the Gender Champion Awards, which celebrated individuals and organizations that made significant contributions to gender equity. Awardees were recognized for their innovative practices, impactful initiatives, and commitment to promoting social justice. The awards underscored the importance of acknowledging efforts that inspire change and set a benchmark for gender mainstreaming.

The conference featured seven dynamic panel presentations as invited speeches delivered by distinguished experts in the field in different topics such as; Intersectional and Integrated Perspectives on Gender Mainstreaming, Emphasizing the Need for an Intersectional and Integrated Approach to Gender Mainstreaming, Focusing on Transformative Actions for Addressing Economic, Social, and Environmental Disparities, The Integration of the Feminine and the Masculine: A Philosophical and Psycho-spiritual Perspective and so on. Speakers are Prof. Hemamali Gunathilaka, Prof. Prabha Manuratne, Dr. K. Guruparan, Eng. (Ms.) T. Santhadevi, Dr. P.A. Dinesh Coonghe, Mr. T. Satheesan and Rev. Fr. S.M. Selvaratnam.

The conference featured 53 abstracts presented by national and international researchers, covering diverse topics under the umbrella of gender equity and equality. The submissions included case studies, project reports, success stories, and empirical research that explored themes such as; Gender mainstreaming in education and workplaces, The impact of digital transformation on women in SMEs, Gender-based violence on university campuses, Socio-cultural norms and their influence on gender roles, Cybersecurity and gender-based crimes and so on.

IRSGEE 2024 successfully established a platform for inclusive and transformative dialogue on gender equity. By addressing critical issues through intersectional and integrated lenses, the symposium paved the way for actionable solutions and collaborative efforts. The Centre for Gender Equity and Equality at the University of Jaffna reaffirmed its commitment to advancing this agenda, setting a precedent for future conferences to build upon. As the University of Jaffna celebrates its Golden Jubilee, the symposium stands as a testament to its dedication to fostering a more equitable and inclusive society.
