The Centre for Gender Equity and Equality (CGEE) at the University of Jaffna, in partnership with the Women’s Education and Research Centre (WERC), organized a powerful campaign to highlight the pervasive issue of gender-based violence in society. Held on 14th December at the Shanthiham Centre Hall, this event was part of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. Coordinated by Dr. (Mrs.) Dilogini Sangarathas, the Coordinator for the Certificate course in Women’s Studies at the University of Jaffna, the campaign was a remarkable effort to raise awareness and foster meaningful dialogue on the issue. Her leadership and dedication were instrumental in bringing together the different components of the campaign, which unfolded through three dynamic and impactful elements.
1. Dance performance: The dance performance, “Ezunthiru Pennee,” organized by Neervaiyoor Ponshakthi Kalaakethraa, was a powerful artistic expression performed by students to address the theme of gender-based violence. Choreographed and trained by Mrs. Gajenthiran Sathiyapriya, a member of CGEE, the dance showcased the resilience and strength of women, encouraging empowerment and raising awareness about the societal issues surrounding gender violence. The performance blended traditional and modern dance forms to effectively communicate the emotional and transformative journey of overcoming oppression, inspiring the audience to engage with the campaign’s message of equality and justice.
2. Drama Performances as Forum Theatre: In performing the Drama Performances as Forum Theatre, students of the Sir Ponnambalam Ramanathan Faculty of Performing and Visual Arts, University of Jaffna, awakened and moved their audiences with the protruding and stark realities of the physical, mental and social impact that gender-based violence had on survivors. The performances, though told through evocative storytelling, mirrored the attitudes with which society left everyone to be with, hastening the fostering of “reflection and connection” with the audience. The interactive session was choreographed by Ms. Thavachchelvi Rasan and Yalini Nadesu, Senior Lecturers and broke traditional barriers, engaging the audience demanding discussions on prevention strategies. The forum’s purpose was to drive discussion about the root causes of gender violence, how to challenge the norms that promote it, and to work together for actionable solutions in an exciting, inclusive safe space.
3. Poster Campaign: Students of the University of Jaffna displayed their creativity and passion through compelling posters designed to provoke thought, spread awareness, and inspire collective action. The visuals powerfully conveyed messages of resilience, equality, and hope, ensuring the campaign’s impact reached beyond the event. This session was originated and organized by Dr. (Mrs.) S. Dilogini.
The campaign witnessed enthusiastic participation from University of Jaffna CGEE members, lecturers and students, symbolizing a collaborative effort to address the pressing issue of violence against women. This united front underscored the importance of educational institutions as critical spaces for initiating social change. Together, these initiatives reminded everyone of the urgent need to dismantle systemic barriers, challenge gender-based injustices, and foster a society rooted in equality and justice for all.
